This is a question I believe I am best suited to answer as this is what I do for a living. I help people make money from their social presence.
Here is how we will break-down this discussion, first let’s discuss what you have explicitly asked “How people make money using FB groups” and then we will talk about the implicit question “how to effectively use the ways discussed to make good money”.
Ways to make money via Facebook Groups?
Now if you are an Admin of a Facebook group there are a couple of options which you have to make money out of it, namely Influencer Marketing or Affiliate Marketing, both very similar to how they work.
Micro-influencer marketing: The concept is very simple, you have a following of people interested in a specific domain and there are brands/startups who want to reach these people. You help these brands spread their message among your followers and they pay you for the users they get.
Ways this work is by posting a link/story about a product or service on your page and when your followers click on the link and go to the brand's site, you get paid for it. This is called “cost-per-click” (CPC), which varies from Rs 10–20 ($0.16-$0.32). So if 100 people click on what you shared you make around Rs 1500 ($25) from one single post.
Where to get these deals from brands?
Well approaching them directly is not an option since you need a steady stream of campaigns to promote to make a sustainable income from this. You can sign up with micro-influencer platforms for this. Again very simple, you just sign up and specify on what kind of campaigns you would want to promote, they automatically match the right campaigns for you along with reports on how many people are clicking on what you share etc and what you are earning.

Affiliate marketing: Similar to above, but there you just put links to products on e-commerce sites like Amazon and get paid a commission when anyone makes a purchase from your affiliate account.
How to effectively monetize your group?
Focused audience:
Now for any marketer, the target audience is the number one concern. If you have a 100 million followers from all walks of life and shapes and sizes, that audience is so diverse that it becomes very difficult to market to it.
So if I am a health food startup, I would only want to market to fitness enthusiast and a group dedicated to fitness would be an ideal match.
Keep your group audience tight and narrow, a group with a focused base of 10K is much better than a diverse audience of 500K.
Engagement:
A group with millions of followers and no one engaging with content is completely useless. There are tens of thousands of groups out there with > 100K members but zero engagement, you post something relevant yet you get 2–3 likes. This makes no sense to any marketers.
So, keep your group engaged.
